Hair dying?please answer asap!?

im dying my hair like a light brown color but my natural hair color is dark brown. I've never dyed my hair before and my stepmom is doing it for me. I need to know if The color would stay. I want it to look different. Im going to buy the hair color at walmart in a little so if you could answer my question about what i have to do, it would really help! thanks!
