Can anyone answer my question?

My student asks me why carbon dioxide very soluble in natrium hydroxide solution but not soluble in pyrogallol solution. And why oxygen soluble in pyrogallol solution but not soluble in natrium hydroxide. Please give me a simple answer but strong answer for my student ( age 13 years old). Thank so much.
